The best mobile development platform for hobbyist programmer - IV

The best mobile development platform for hobbyist programmer - I The best mobile development platform for hobbyist programmer - II The best mobile development platform for hobbyist programmer - III Over the last few years the whole mobile landscape has completely changed. Now the contenders have also changed. When I last wrote about the topic there was no SDK for the iPhone and Android had not launched. Since then the whole landscape has changed. iPhone is the king amongst the platforms. Android is a close second. J2ME is a platform which still goes unnoticed since its just not part of most new smartphones. The process to develop Windows Mobile apps has gone a complete transformation with a completely brand new way of developing apps. Symbian is in its last leg, Nokia will be moving to MeeGo soon enough. Palm development also changed completely with the launch of Web OS. If you plan to develop today here is how you can go about it. 1) iOS Development - SDK for iDevices 2) Android 3) P...

The best mobile development platform for hobbyist programmer - Final words

Finally the frenzy had ended and no more than 5-6 visitors online at a time :), never thought I would be happy about the fact that hordes of people are not visiting the blog. I was about to shift my blog to http://vivekjishtu.com and in a way it was good that I did not. In the last 2 days more than 10K people visited the blog. That site would have collapsed within the first 20-30 minutes. I got all sorts of comments, some good, some bad and a few ugly ones. I've still not gone over the comments on slashdot and probably will not go through them anytime soon :P After all the frenzy I realized that even though I like .net as a platform for development but the fact is that it is expensive to buy the development platform. Given these circumstances Java ME (The platform formally known as J2ME), it almost sound like "Symbol," "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince" wins hands down. Putting BREW in there made no sense 'cause its almost impossible for a hobbyist to...

The best mobile development platform for hobbyist programmer - II

Just did not realize that the post would be on slashdot , and now I am scared to go though the comments there.  I was looking for 5-6 comments on my blog but I've got a lot more than I wished for. There was quite a lot more that I wanted to add in that post, but that would be for some other day. Since I saw a lot of people visiting the blog I wanted to know a little about what you guys think about the best mobile development platform. Also are there any more crazy people out there (besides me)  who even think about programming their mobile phones? Just to answer a few comments on the blog post I missed out Maemo 'cause I was talking about software development on the mobile phone. And as far as comparing iPhone which is supposed to be "hardware" I meant the OS on iPhone as a platform for development. " You forgot Nokia's Python implementation for their Series 60 line of phones. As far as joy in programming goes things won't get much bette...

The best mobile development platform for hobbyist programmer

This is something I have been thinking for a while so here it goes. This is a list of platforms I know of and my choice of what makes sense for a hobbyist programmer like me. Let me first list down all the possible platforms and then list down the pros and cons that I feel are associated with each platform. Java ME (The platform formally known as J2ME) Windows Mobile Linux Palm Brew Symbian Blackberry iPhone iPhone Let me start with iPhone the darling of the media and blogger's till about a fortnight. I had real expectations from iPhone as a platform but the way its been going so far I would never bother developing for it. Officially there is no SDK with which one can build applications. What ever tools the community had built have been rendered useless with the iPhone 1.1.1 software upgrade . The community might be able to hack a version for 1.1.1 but without any support from almighty apple its just a cat and mouse game. With every minor release the applications ...

Blog editor for the J2ME or Symbian

Lately I wanted to blog using a client application for blogger but I have been unable to find a good application. I really hate logging into the interface using my phone. I just wish I had a good phone based application that did such a thing. Lets see if I don't find one it will go into my TODO list. I will probably start an application that does this. Not sure how many people would want such an application but anything till I find one I can think of developing one myself. Also I really miss a nice little desktop blog client. All of the ones I've seen are bloated and take a while to startup. I had planned to start work on one about 2 years back but that idea went nowhere. Lets see till when I can stick with these things.

Orange Sky with the E61i

Image
Orange Sky The sky really looks awesome. Have been taking quite a lot of pics of clouds and sky. You can check them out at http://flickr.com/photos/vivekjishtu they are really random and the quality is not great but I still love the fact that I can snap a pic every now and then. All these pics have been captured using the E61i. These days I have been using Shozu quite a lot and whatever I click is normally online in less than a minute. The application is really easy to use and gets the work done. Just click a pic and it gives you the option to directly upload the pic to flickr. The other application that I have been using is kyte its like a live version of my life. The pics and the videos are all live.

I am live blogging now

Its been a while since the last post but these days I am more into live blogging and you can catch me live on Vivek live and Kickin' TV . I am also photo blogging on Flickr so you can catch a lot of whats happening in my life these days.

The first post from e61i

I am just testing out my new mobile phone. I am writing this post on the phone.

Chinese iPhone clone

Image
I was checking out this iPhone clone, though there is still time for the real iPhone to launch I just had a sneek peak at this clone, actually two clones. Though they really look cheap but might have some flaunt value till the real one launches. No multi touch as of now, but I am amazed at the speed with which this clone was made and released even before the launch of the real device. Technorati Tags: iphone , clone , apple
